Serenity

In private collection (NZ)

Made of the hard and dense variety of Oamaru limestone

The face is a close-up image of a life size sculpture of a young woman wading through shallow water carrying a load of produce in a basket on her head.

Although made from ‘dead’ stone I managed to “blow” life into her eyes and face which helps the onlooker to make an emotional connection.

Transferring emotions into a rigid and hard material is one of the more difficult things for a sculptor to achieve successfully. The sculptor gets only one chance to get it right. There is no pasting or painting over, no fixing possible. Every move with the chisel needs to be considered carefully before it makes contact with the stone.

This is even more crucial when working on a commissioned piece with a deadline.
